Having audited IMAGINETIC’s Game Design for Policy Analysis and Development course in 2020-21 I can say with certainty that this was a task well worth the time and energy required.  Over 14 weeks, through a full range of exercises and playtests, the value and applicability of serious gaming became manifestly obvious. Regardless of the topic, subject matter, policy area, or issue at hand, the techniques and processes shared in this course have wide applicability. Although careful attention is paid to the specific dynamics and mechanics of game design and serious gaming and simulations, what proves to be most valuable is not the what, but the how. This LEGEND (Learning Experiential Game ENgagement Design) course imparts a novel way of approaching myriad problems and challenges facing decision makers across various professional milieus. Moreover, the techniques and approaches that makeup Tom Fisher’s approach to serious gaming and game design are in fact the building blocks for creative and analytical thinking and will provide valuable tools and lessons for those interested in beginning their foray into serious gaming, or more seasoned professionals looking to refine their training and design skills. I saw first hand what an active learning environment Tom curates in the course and can say that in addition to the quality of the material offered, when combined with the various backgrounds and strengths of all participants along with his own personal flair for facilitation, this course over delivered in my view. I am not a serious gamer in either a personal or professional capacity but carry lessons from this course related to brainstorming, personal interaction, and problem solving with me and it has made me a better teammate and stronger leader.

In terms of game design and serious gaming, in a matter of 14 weeks the participants were able to hone their skills, as well as develop and test their ideas on serious gaming, as well as produce actual serious games. Furthermore, the course reinforces that “knowledge creation and learning moments” are one of the key benefits to serious gaming – but it also achieves this in the course itself week-to-week between and among its participants. Serious game design is able to expose and challenge preconceived notions participants may have, as well as develop new thought processes and approaches to traditional and persistent challenges organizations and teams are facing. Ultimately, this course is of immense value to anyone wanting to improve their problem solving, training, and pedagogical tool kit and skill set.
